Every second and fourth Friday, The Haley House Bakery Café in Dudley Square hosts The House Slam with good food, an open mic, a featured poet, and a competitive slam portion. Entry to the venue is free to all patrons age eighteen and older –symbolic of its goal to be an inclusive space.
This Thursday at 7pm, OompOutLoud and the House Slam Team will host The Rap Slam: A Monthly Rap Slam at the Dade Street location. Oompa writes about the rap slam:
Basically, I’ve been wondering what it would be like to mix the competitiveness and structure of poetry slam with rap/hip-hop music so…If you’re into [competing] and think you have songs that are strong enough to give people what they want, you should sign up for the rap slam.
The rap slam will kick off the night at 7pm. It is best to get to the venue between 6:15pm and 6:30pm because the House fills quickly. Boston-based rapper Lik Meraki will perform a 20-30 minute set, then an open mic will wrap up the evening. For more information about the rap slam, RSVP to the Facebook event. Check out The House Slam website for more information about the team, its vision and upcoming events.
The Haley House uses food and the power of community to break down barriers between people, transfer new skills, and revitalize neighborhoods. Get more information about the Haley House here.
